This winter festival journey begins in Paro and continues to Thimphu, where Bhutan’s capital introduces travelers to the country’s living traditions and cultural heritage. From there, the route climbs over Dochula Pass and descends into the vast glacial valley of Phobjikha, one of Bhutan’s most pristine conservation areas and winter home of the sacred Black-Necked Cranes.
The highlight of the journey is attending the Black-Necked Crane Festival at Gangtey, where conservation and spirituality come together in a uniquely Bhutanese celebration. The trip continues to the fertile valley of Punakha before returning to Paro for the unforgettable Tiger’s Nest Monastery hike.

Day 01 :

Arrival in Paro – Transfer to Thimphu

Arrive at Paro International Airport, one of the world’s most scenic Himalayan landings. After immigration formalities, meet your guide and drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital city.
Visit the Memorial Chorten, Buddha Dordenma, and Tashichho Dzong (outside view if government sessions are ongoing).
Overnight in Thimphu.

Day 02 :

Thimphu Cultural Exploration

Visit the National Institute for Zorig Chusum (School of Traditional Arts), Folk Heritage Museum, and the Centenary Farmers Market if traveling over the weekend.
Explore local handicrafts and observe Bhutan’s unique urban life where tradition and modernity coexist naturally.
Overnight in Thimphu.

Day 03 :

Thimphu to Phobjikha Valley via Dochula Pass

Drive across Dochula Pass (3,100m), famous for its 108 memorial chortens and panoramic Himalayan views on clear days.
Continue onward to Phobjikha Valley, a protected glacial valley and winter habitat of the endangered Black-Necked Cranes.
Visit Gangtey Monastery, one of Bhutan’s oldest Nyingma monasteries.

Day 04 :

Black-Necked Crane Festival Experience

Attend the Black-Necked Crane Festival held annually at Gangtey.
The festival celebrates the arrival of the cranes through traditional mask dances, crane-themed performances by local school children, and cultural programs focused on environmental conservation.
Spend the afternoon visiting the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre and observing cranes across the marshland.

Day 05 :

Nature Walk and Village Experience

Walk the famous Gangtey Nature Trail through pine forests, open meadows, and traditional villages.
Visit a local farmhouse and experience authentic Bhutanese rural hospitality with traditional butter tea and local cuisine.
This day offers a deeper understanding of Bhutan’s highland way of life.

Day 06 :

Phobjikha to Punakha

Drive to Punakha, Bhutan’s ancient winter capital.
Visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong, built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and considered one of Bhutan’s finest architectural masterpieces.
Visit Chimi Lhakhang, famously known as the Fertility Temple.

Day 07 :

Punakha to Paro

Return to Paro.
Visit Rinpung Dzong, Kyichu Lhakhang (one of Bhutan’s oldest temples), and enjoy leisure time exploring Paro town.
Prepare for the final spiritual highlight of the journey.

Day 08 :

Tiger’s Nest Monastery Hike – Departure

Morning hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery), Bhutan’s most iconic sacred site dramatically perched on a cliffside.
Built around the meditation cave of Guru Rinpoche in the 8th century, it remains the spiritual heart of Bhutan.
After lunch, transfer to the airport for departure.
