Punakha Dromchoe — Sacred Warrior Festival of the Valley
Held at the historic Punakha Dzong in the lush valley of Punakha, Punakha Dromchoe is a powerful three-day festival that celebrates Bhutan’s divine protection and ancient warrior traditions. Observed from February 13 – February 15, it is one of the most spiritually significant winter festivals in the kingdom.
Festival At A Glance
Location: Punakha Dzong
Duration: 3 Days
Purpose: Invocation of protective deities & historical victory blessings
What makes It Unique?
Sacred Origin Story: Commemorates Bhutan’s 17th-century victory over Tibetan forces and honors protective deities believed to safeguard the kingdom.
Masked Warrior Rituals: Rare “Pazaps” (traditional militia performers) reenact historic battles in full ceremonial armor.
Ancient Fortress Setting: Takes place inside the iconic riverside fortress where the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers meet.
Spiritual Intensity: Unlike festive dances, many rituals are deeply tantric and performed only by trained monks and lay monks.
Why Experience It?
Punakha Dromchoe offers one of Bhutan’s most authentic cultural experiences — a living ceremony of protection, history and spirituality set inside one of the country’s most beautiful dzongs.
