Thimphu Tshechu — Bhutan’s Grand Mask Dance Festival

September 21 - September 23

Held annually in the historic Tashichho Dzong within Thimphu, the Thimphu Tshechu is Bhutan’s most visited religious festival and a major social gathering for locals. Established in the 17th century by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal’s spiritual tradition, it is performed to invoke blessings, remove obstacles and promote wellbeing for the kingdom.

Festival At A Glance

Location: Tashichho Dzong
Duration: 3–4 Days
Purpose: Blessings, purification and community merit

What Makes It Unique?

Iconic masked Cham dances performed by monks and lay performers in vibrant silk costumes.

Sacred dances include Guru Rinpoche, Black Hat dancers and wrathful deity rituals symbolizing protection and purification.

Thousands of locals arrive in full traditional attire (gho and kira), turning the courtyard into a living cultural gallery.

Final day features the unveiling of the massive Thongdrel — a sacred silk scroll believed to cleanse sins just by viewing it.

Why Experience It?

Thimphu Tshechu is a rare blend of spirituality and celebration inside a fortress monastery, where ancient rituals, music and community devotion come together in one of the Himalayas’ most visually powerful festivals.
