Thimphu Drubchen — Bhutan’s Sacred Fortress Festival

September 17

Held inside the majestic Tashichho Dzong, the Thimphu Drubchen is one of Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred Buddhist festivals. Originally performed to commemorate Bhutan’s victory over Tibetan invasions in the 17th century, the festival blends powerful tantric rituals, masked warrior dances and centuries-old spiritual traditions rarely seen outside monastic communities.

Festival At A Glance

Location: Tashichho Dzong
Duration: 1Days
Founded By: Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal’s lineage

What Makes It Unique?

Sacred masked dances reenact Bhutan’s historic battles and spiritual protection rituals.

Early morning ceremonies feature deep Buddhist chants, giant horns and ceremonial drums inside the fortress monastery.

Unlike larger festivals, Thimphu Drubchen remains deeply spiritual and less commercialized.

The festival directly leads into the famous Thimphu Tshechu celebrations.

Why Experience It?

Witness Bhutanese spirituality in its most authentic form — ancient rituals, fortress courtyards filled with incense, monks in crimson robes and traditions preserved for over 400 years.
